É baseado na peça de mesmo nome de Arthur Miller sobre os fatos históricos envolvendo o julgamento das Bruxas de Salém. Miller também escreveu o roteiro do filme que traz no elenco Daniel Day-Lewis, Winona Ryder, Joan Allen e Paul Scofield.
